Olivia’s House is a nonprofit grief and loss center that provides no-cost bereavement education and peer support for children, teens, and caregivers following the death of a loved one. Its work began with the Hearts Can Heal program in 1996, and the organization established its York center in 2002. With locations in York and Hanover, Pennsylvania, the organization serves families throughout South Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland.

What They Do

Olivia’s House – A Grief and Loss Center for Children is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered under Tax ID 23-3100851. Its services start with a private grief consultation, during which the clinical director discusses the family’s circumstances and develops an individualized bereavement support plan.

Its Hearts Can Heal program brings grieving children and their caregivers together for structured peer support and grief education. The organization also runs Little Ones, a program for younger children that uses age-appropriate activities to explore grief and loss. Through play, creative activities, and group discussions, children express their feelings and share memories of loved ones who have died.

Families requiring specialized mental health care can receive referrals to qualified therapists. Olivia’s House also offers guidance before an anticipated death, pet loss resources, and WINGS, an alumni program that organizes free social activities for families who have completed its grief education programs.

The organization maintains the James Karns Memorial Lending Library, where families and educators can borrow books and other grief-related materials. Learn more about Olivia’s House at oliviashouse.org.

According to its Candid profile, Olivia’s House connected with 4,686 grieving families in 2024 and its clinical director conducted 181 individualized bereavement assessments.
