Latino Diabetes Association is a nonprofit health organization that provides culturally relevant education and support for diabetes prevention and management. Based in Montebello, California, it serves individuals and families in underserved communities across Los Angeles County through free prevention programs, self-management education, health resources, and wellness initiatives.

What They Do

Latino Diabetes Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2004 in response to rising rates of Type 2 diabetes and obesity among families and young people. It focuses on prevention and self-management education, particularly in underserved communities facing barriers to healthcare and reliable health information. The organization operates under EIN 20-0303774.

Its programs include the “Lucha” Fight Against Diabetes Prevention Program, an eight-week educational course led by bilingual Certified Diabetes Educators, nutritionists, and healthcare professionals. Participants learn about diabetes prevention, healthy eating, physical activity, blood glucose management, and reducing the risk of complications. Additional programs include Sabor y SazĂłn diabetic-friendly cooking classes, Mi Vida Yoga exercise classes, Stanford University’s Diabetes Self-Management Program, peer-to-peer diabetes support groups, and blindness prevention initiatives. All programs are offered free of charge and are open to people of any ethnicity.

Beyond education, the organization provides case management and supportive services that connect participants with community resources such as healthcare clinics, medication assistance programs, food resources, insurance information, mental health services, and other support programs. Latino Diabetes Association also conducts community outreach, health fairs, and free screenings during National Diabetes Awareness Month. Additional information about its programs and services is available at www.lda.org.
