AHA is a member-driven nonprofit village that builds and sustains a 55+ community to successfully navigate aging. Together, we share activities, programs and services, including access to needed assistance.
At Home in Alexandria (AHA) is a member-driven nonprofit village that helps adults age 55 and older remain active, connected, and independent while continuing to live in the Alexandria community they call home.
Established in 2011, AHA was created by local residents who recognized the need for practical, non-medical support that would allow older adults to age safely and confidently in their own homes. The organization connects members with volunteer assistance, community resources, and social opportunities that strengthen both independence and quality of life. As part of the growing village movement, AHA helps older Alexandrians remain engaged in their neighborhoods while accessing support when needed.
AHA members have access to a variety of practical services designed to make everyday life easier. Volunteer-supported services include transportation, errands, technical support, light home maintenance, organizing and decluttering assistance, and short-term pet or lawn care. Members can also receive referrals to trusted community resources and professional service providers when specialized assistance is needed.
Beyond practical support, AHA offers a robust calendar of social and educational activities that encourage engagement and reduce isolation. Members can participate in walking and cycling groups, discussion clubs, guest speaker events, game days, restaurant outings, and affinity groups focused on books and current events. These opportunities help foster meaningful relationships and create a strong sense of community among members.
Today, AHA (Tax ID: 26-4557978) is part of a national network of more than 300 village organizations that support aging in place, including more than 70 villages throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region.
