HorseSensing is a Kentucky-based nonprofit that provides horse-centered programs for veterans, men in recovery, and others facing personal challenges. Through its work, the organization gives participants opportunities to build practical skills, personal responsibility, and greater stability in a structured horse-centered environment.

What They Do

HorseSensing teaches participants how to interact with, care for, and work alongside horses as a way to develop responsibility, confidence, communication skills, and emotional awareness. The organization provides structured experiences for veterans transitioning to civilian life and individuals recovering from addiction through hands-on work with horses.

One of HorseSensing’s primary initiatives is its Residential Treatment and Therapeutic Job Training and Placement Program. Participants receive training in horse care, stable operations, and related skills while working toward long-term personal and professional goals. The program provides practical experience, workforce development, and a structured environment focused on recovery and stability.

HorseSensing also offers Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy and learning experiences that use interactions with horses to address emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal challenges. The organization’s approach is influenced by the work of horseman Chris Irwin, whose methods emphasize mutual respect, trust, awareness, and communication between humans and horses.

According to HorseSensing’s 2024 Annual Report, 19 men entered the residential treatment and job training program during the year, and 12 participants were placed in jobs within the horse industry. The organization serves veterans, individuals in recovery, and other participants throughout Shelby County and surrounding communities. HorseSensing, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with EIN 83-2609641. Additional information about programs and services is available at https://www.horsesensing.org/.
