The Long Walk Home is a veteran-led nonprofit based in Venice, Florida, that helps veterans and military families nationwide transition from military to civilian life. Founded in 2006 by Marine veteran Ron Zaleski, the organization provides mentorship, self-empowerment programs, suicide prevention workshops, wellness classes, and community events at no cost to veterans and their loved ones.
What They Do
The Long Walk Home centers much of its work on the 10 Challenges to Service, a mentorship-based program that helps veterans reconnect with themselves, their families, and their communities. The challenges focus on areas such as goal setting, personal relationships, habits, anger management, gratitude, and forgiveness. Vets can move through the program with trained mentors, many of whom are also former service members or have close military connections.
The nonprofit also offers ASIST, or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, a two-day workshop designed to give participants the confidence and tools to recognize suicide risk, speak with someone in crisis, and connect them with safety and care. Alongside this training, The Long Walk Home provides wellness workshops, peer support, outreach events, and a resource database for veterans and military families.
Community events give veterans space to build trust, reconnect with others, and take part in shared experiences such as hiking, rafting, camping, and other outdoor or group activities. These programs aim to reduce isolation and create stronger connections after service.
Through its mentorship program, the nonprofit reports 201 mentees served, 39 active mentors, and more than 2,700 personal challenges completed.
The Long Walk Home, formally registered as The Long Walk Home, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with Tax ID 20-5700906. More information about its programs, events, mentorship, and suicide prevention work is available on its official website.
