Center for Inquiry is a nonprofit educational organization that promotes science, critical thinking, and freedom of inquiry. Founded by philosopher Paul Kurtz in 1991, the organization is headquartered in Amherst, New York, and provides educational programs, publications, public events, and policy initiatives for audiences in the United States and internationally.
Center for Inquiry, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 22-2306795) that advances public understanding of science, skepticism, and secular humanist values. The organization develops educational resources and programs that teach people to evaluate claims using reason, evidence, and scientific inquiry.
One of its educational initiatives is CFI On Campus, which supports college and university students interested in science, critical thinking, secularism, and free expression. CFI also operates the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES), which provides educators with resources and training for teaching evolution. According to CFI’s 2025 Progress Report, more than 9,500 teachers have been trained through the TIES program during its first ten-plus years.
CFI also publishes Skeptical Inquirer, a magazine focused on scientific skepticism and critical thinking, and Free Inquiry, a journal covering secular humanism and related issues. Its public programs include lectures, conferences, and other educational events featuring scientists, educators, authors, and scholars. Through these programs and resources, CFI serves students, educators, researchers, and lifelong learners in the United States and around the world.
