Symphony of the Potomac is a Glen Echo-based community orchestra serving Montgomery County and the Greater Washington area. Now led by Music Director Joel Lazar, the primarily volunteer orchestra gave its first independent performance in June 2008 after its musicians had previously performed together for nearly 40 years as the Jewish Community Center Symphony Orchestra in Rockville.

What Symphony of the Potomac Does

Symphony of the Potomac gives local audiences access to live symphonic music at reasonable ticket prices. Its concerts are held at the Cultural Arts Center at Montgomery College in Silver Spring, where the orchestra presents classical repertoire, featured soloists, and community performances for listeners throughout Montgomery County and the Washington, DC area.

The orchestra’s programming includes works by major composers as well as concerts built around specific musical themes. Recent and upcoming programs have featured Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Florence Price, Chausson, Falla, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, and other composers, often with guest soloists on piano, violin, cello, viola, clarinet, or voice.

As a volunteer-driven ensemble, Symphony of the Potomac also gives musicians a place to continue performing challenging orchestral music in a community setting. The orchestra welcomes new members of all ages, offers auditions throughout the season, and rehearses regularly from September through early June.

Symphony of the Potomac, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with Tax ID 26-0385674. If you’re interested to learn more about its concerts, ticket information, auditions, board, music director, and donation options, head over to its website here.
