The Beacon Institute is a Columbia, Maryland-based nonprofit and LifeSpan Network’s educational affiliate for senior care and service providers. Founded in 1996, it provides professional education, training, and resources for caregivers, providers, administrators, and other professionals working with older adults across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and the broader Mid-Atlantic senior care field.
The Beacon Institute offers expert educational programs that help senior care professionals stay current on clinical, operational, regulatory, financial, leadership, compliance, and best-practice topics.
Its training opportunities include in-person classes at the Handelman Conference Center, live webinars, on-demand learning, seminars, and professional development programs designed for people working across long-term care, assisted living, skilled nursing, senior housing, and related service settings.
The institute’s six-week CNA/GNA program gives future healthcare workers a mix of online learning and hands-on training. Students spend time in the classroom, practice skills in a lab, and gain clinical experience in a long-term care facility. They learn the basics of patient care, including hygiene, mobility support, vital signs, infection control, communication, documentation, and assistance with everyday activities.
Online learning expands access for professionals who need flexible training. The Beacon Institute’s on-demand offerings include courses through AHCA/NCAL, Training and eTracking Solutions, the Institute for Post-Acute Care, and an Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias education series developed with grant support from the Maryland Department of Health. The institute trains thousands annually and hosts the largest annual senior care conference for the Mid-Atlantic region.
